Bora Bora is an atoll of coral reef, located 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) northwest of Tahiti and 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of the Austral Islands. It contains five pass-through coral islands:
Motu Mute, Motu Ahuna, Tevairoa, Vairao and Otemanu. Of these five only Motu Mute is permanently inhabited, as it is possible to walk between the other islands at low tide.
The main island is made up of two parts: the larger part called ‘Ahuna’, which takes up most of the land area; and the smaller part called ‘Mute’, where most of the population lives. The two are connected by a causeway known as “Tetea”.
There are several small uninhabited islands around the lagoon which come under the jurisdiction of the commune of Bora Bora. The largest is Motu Tapu, an island on which now stands an 18th century stone temple with images dedicated to the goddesses of birth, death and resurrection;
this was built by King Pomare II in 1818 in order to appease them after he had been cured by their intercession from a disease that had been plaguing him for many years.
The first recorded European encounter with this island was by Yves Joseph de Kerguelen-Trémarec on May 5 1768 from his ship La Mascarinade while searching for La Pérouse’s missing ships in that area.

Bora Bora is expensive because of it’s beautiful beaches
Bora Bora is an island in French Polynesia that is known for its luxury resorts and beautiful beaches. Since it’s a popular tourist destination, it’s also one of the most expensive places to visit in the world.
The island has two main airports: The main airport is on the east side of the island, and there’s a small airport on the west side. The main airport has connections to other islands in French Polynesia.
But not many international flights. There are no direct flights from the United States to Bora Bora. You can take connecting flights from Los Angeles or San Francisco through Tahiti’s Faa’a International Airport (PPT).
There are several ways to get around the island once you arrive. You can rent a scooter or take taxis, but these options are more expensive than using public transportation (the bus). The bus operates regularly from 6 am until 11:30 pm every day except Sundays and holidays.
It takes about 15 minutes to get from one end of town to another by bus, and there are stops at most hotels along with other popular locations like supermarkets and pharmacies (but not banks).
The most famous beach is Matira Beach which is on the south side of the island. It’s not as popular as it used to be because it’s been over-developed with hotels and restaurants, but it’s still beautiful.
There are also many other beautiful beaches to explore including Motu Piti Aau (the largest atoll in French Polynesia) and Motu Nui (home to a huge white sand beach).

It’s not just that you can’t build a resort like this on a shoestring budget. It’s that there are so many other things you can do with your money that have little in common with the experience of staying at the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora and that are much cheaper as well.
For example, let’s say we wanted to create an experience that was similar to what you get at Four Seasons Bora Bora but cheaper. How would we do it?
First, we’d need a place to stay. Instead of renting out an entire island, we’d go with something smaller say Palm Beach in Florida (which has its own private island nearby).
It costs $100 per night for two people in their basic room during the high season (and much more if you want one of their nicer rooms).
That works out to $4,500 for five nights for just two people or about one-third of what it costs for two people at Four Seasons Bora Bora for five nights (not including airfare).
This is a resort town and the local people are paid well to manage the hotels, restaurants and shops. The food is very good in Bora Bora and there is a wide range of restaurants to choose from.
The same can’t be said for Tahiti or Moorea, where most restaurants are mediocre at best. The lagoon is beautiful but not as clear as it used to be due to overfishing and coral bleaching.
The reef around Bora Bora has lots of sea life, including sharks (not sure if they are safe to swim with). There are also many interesting fish species that you may not see elsewhere in French Polynesia (e.g., Napoleon wrasse).

Bora Bora is a foodie paradise making it expensive
Bora Bora has become a foodie paradise, with top chefs opening restaurants on the island. The high prices are worth it because the quality of the food and service is excellent. There are also many good restaurants that offer more reasonable prices for those who want to save money during their stay in Bora Bora.
Our favorite restaurants:
La Table D’Oro – This restaurant offers French cuisine at reasonable prices and is located on the main street of Vaitape. There is also a buffet option if you don’t want to choose from a menu. Our favorite dishes include the beef bourguignon and chicken curry.
Le St-Germain – This restaurant offers French cuisine with an Asian twist, which means you’ll find dishes like pork tenderloin in coconut milk curry sauce served alongside spaghetti with seafood sauce. We recommend trying this place for lunch because it’s cheaper than dinner time!
Le Chalet du Roi Pomare – This restaurant serves traditional Tahitian food right on the lagoon at sunset! It’s one of our favorite places to go while we’re visiting Bora Bora because they have so many delicious options on their menu. They also have a great selection of wines and cocktails.
La Plage de Piau – This is another great beachfront restaurant in Vaitape that has excellent food and drinks. The view is also incredible, making this one of our favorite places to eat while staying in Bora Bora!
Le Village des Arts – This restaurant has some of the best French cuisine you’ll find anywhere in French Polynesia! It’s located near Le Village Marina, which is a great spot for shopping, dining and exploring the water with all sorts of water activities like snorkeling and scuba diving.

The reason why it is expensive to visit here is pretty simple. Bora Bora is a very remote destination, and so most things that you need have to be imported. If a flight lands on the island, then there are no roads and the resort’s electricity must be generated by diesel generators.
The water must be imported in large tanks and desalinised before it can be used. Fish and vegetables have to be brought in by boat. These steps make everything more expensive, which includes restaurants and luxury accommodation.
Therefore, visitors will have to pay around US$400 per night for a luxury room – these rooms are usually owned by multi-national hotel chains such as Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton.
Bora Bora is beautiful, quiet and just the place you would assume to be the most expensive. It is ranked among other luxury spots like Monaco and the Bahamas. There is a reason it’s expensive though. If money is not a problem for you, then Bora Bora can be in your budget if you are looking to feel pampered like a king.
It’s difficult to say what the exact reason for Bora Bora’s high cost of living is, although its remote location makes it expensive to do business in.
