As part of our ongoing research into snowfall in New Hampshire, we explored two popular sources of crowd-sourced weather data open Weather Map and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
With over 6,000 miles of coastline, new hampshire isn’t exactly known for it’s mountains. However, there is one peak that rises from the White Mountains of new hampshire Mt Washington at 6288 ft.
This peak is famous for it’s sub-zero temperatures and has a rich history of attracting people who want to summit Mt Washington (I love how they pluralized).
Back in 1849, a group of 22 climbers attempted to summit the mountain in the winter. The result was called “The Mad Snow Storm”, which killed 8 hikers in the first recorded mountaineering death on a US mountain.

Although New Hampshire is well known for its snowfall, it can be quite variable from year to year. The chart below shows the annual snowfall in inches at Concord, the state’s capital city.
In the past ten years (2007 to 2016), there has been a wide range of snowfall amounts. For example, in 2010 there was a record-breaking amount of snowfall with 140 inches (about 12 feet) recorded at Concord during the winter season (December through February).
However, only three years later in 2013 only 15 inches of snow fell during that same time period (less than half as much). The months of January and February tend to be the snowiest months in New Hampshire.
This is because cold air comes down from Canada and meets warm moist air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico and creates very unstable conditions which often lead to very heavy precipitation including rain and/or snow depending on what type of front passes through our area.
The average snowfall in New Hampshire is between 70-100 inches per year with a wide variation across the state. The highest amount of snowfall in one year was in 1993 when an amazing 207 inches fell.
However, this was an extreme outlier compared to the rest of the years since 1885 when records were first kept. The most common amount of snowfall per year is around 70 inches, but some winters may only see 30 or 40 inches while other winters may see over 100 inches!
