These local vineyards make some excellent wines, mainly due to the fact they leverage natural resources like lakes, clean atmosphere, and soil quality to produce delicious wines.

In Maine, there are only four licensed wineries as of 2011, according to the Maine Brewers’ Guild. But there are several vineyard operations working on getting their crops ready for harvest later this year.
The Vineyard at Great Pond Farm on the outskirts of Portland has been growing grapes for more than 50 years. The farm produces about 4 tons of grapes each year that are used for both table and wine production.

Westport rivers vineyard
Westport Rivers Vineyard is a small family-owned and operated winery, located in Westport, Massachusetts. We take great pride in our wines from the grapes we grow on our five acre vineyard, to the bottles we fill with them.
Westport Rivers Vineyard began as an idea in 1997 when the owners purchased their first vineyard property in Westport. Over the next few years they planted several acres of vines, which were later sold when they built their current home and vineyard on Middle Street.
The original name for this winery was “The Lost Valley Winery” but that all changed when they discovered one of their neighbors had already registered that name! Since then they have been known as Westport Rivers Vineyard.
Westport Rivers Vineyard produces reds and whites including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Riesling as well as a limited number of sparkling wines including Brut Rosé and Extra Dry Prosecco.
Westport Rivers Vineyard is located in Westport, Massachusetts. The vineyard was established in 2000, and is owned by the Boudreau Family. Our wines are produced using sustainable farming practices and we use no chemicals or pesticides on our grapes.
Westport Rivers Vineyard is owned by husband and wife team John and Kathy O’Brien who started making wine in 2007. They began their journey into winemaking with vineyard management consulting services before opening their own winery in 2010.
They have been growing grapes at this site since 2000 where they grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc as well as other varieties such as Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Vidal Blanc. In addition to producing their own wines, they also rent out their space for weddings!

Chamard vineyards
Chamard Vineyards is a family owned vineyard and winery in New England. We are committed to producing the highest quality wines from our estate grown grapes and other local fruit. Our wines are available for purchase online, at our tasting room and at select retailers throughout New England.
Chamard Vineyards was founded by John Langlois in 1992 on his family’s farm in New Hampshire’s North Country. For more than a decade, he has grown grapes and made wine on the property known as Chamard Farms. In 2002, John passed the torch to his son David who now manages all aspects of production at the winery.
The winery is located in Candia, New Hampshire just five miles north of Manchester, NH and fifteen miles south of Concord NH.
Chamard Vineyards was established in 1993 by Jamie Chamard, who was born and raised in France, but has lived in the United States for over 35 years. Jamie started the winery with his wife Mary Ann, who was born and raised in Massachusetts.
They bought a small farm in Hatfield, MA that had been an apple orchard for many years. The Chamard’s cultivated their first grapes on the property in 1994, planting 3 acres of Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir vines on the hillside overlooking their home.
Our tasting room is open to the public year round with free tastings offered daily. From our award-winning Riesling to our delicious Cabernet Franc, we have something for everyone!

Stonington vineyards
The Stonington Vineyards winery in New England is a family-owned and operated vineyard and winery. Established in 1996, the vineyard produces award-winning wines from grapes grown on our farm, located in Stonington, Connecticut. Our tasting room and wine shop are open year round to the public.
The vineyard
Our vineyard consists of 1,000 vines planted on 2 acres of land. The grapes are handpicked and individually sorted for quality control before being pressed into wine. All our wines are fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and bottled on site to ensure consistency and quality.
The winery
The winery is equipped with an oak barrel room where we age our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for up to three years before bottling. The barrels are made from French oak which adds subtle vanilla flavors as well as a slight tannin structure to the wine that adds complexity while aging.
Our wines have been well received by critics and consumers alike. In 2010, Stonington Vineyards was named New England’s best winery by Yankee Magazine’s readers’ poll. In 2011, our Pinot Noir was named one of the top 10 Pinots in the world by Wine Enthusiast magazine.

The Salt Water Farm Vineyard is a 2 acre vineyard located in New England. It was planted in 2013 and produces grapes for our own wines and for other wineries. The soil is sandy loam with a high clay content and the climate is maritime with cool summers, cold winters and lots of fog.
We are a small family run business that focuses on quality over quantity. Our goal is to produce great wines at a reasonable price while maintaining our commitment to environmental sustainability and conservation.
Our winery is located on our family farm where we have been farming since 1640. We produce sustainable organic vegetables, herbs & flowers which we sell at farmers markets throughout New England as well as offer for sale through our website www.saltswfarmnh.com.
The winery was started in 2003 by owners Stuart and Susanne Saltzman, who chose to make wine on their family farm because they wanted to bring the love of fine wine back to their roots.
They started with just two acres of grapes, but have expanded to over five acres today. This year marks their thirteenth vintage of wine production! We have been growing grapes since 2004 and producing wine since 2007.
Our first vintage was an unoaked Chardonnay from grapes grown in our front yard! In 2008 we planted our first Pinot Noir vines with hopes of producing our own Pinot Noir someday soon…well someday has arrived!

Ragged island brewing company
Ragged Island Brewing Company is located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The brewery was established in 2013 by brothers Nate and Nick Woodman, who had previously worked together at a local brewery. The business is named after Ragged Island off the coast of Maine where their great-great grandfather once lived.
Ragged Island Brewing Company has been making craft beer since 2013. They currently have four year-round beers: Ragged Island IPA, Ragged Island Red Ale, Boatswain’s Breakfast Stout and Lightkeeper Blonde Ale.
They also have seasonal offerings such as Summer Ale, Winter Warmer and Oktoberfest Lager. All of their beers are handcrafted with only the finest ingredients and no preservatives or additives are ever used!
The taproom features 16 taps that feature Ragged Island’s own creations along with some other local favorites from other breweries around New England. In addition to their own beer on tap they also offer wine by the glass or bottle as well as wine slushies.
The brewery is located in a historic mill building right on the Mystic River. It’s a great place to hang out with friends and enjoy a drink on the deck overlooking the water. Ragged Island Brewing Co. has been open since 2016 and is located in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.
The brewery started when owner Rob Carmichael and his wife Janna opened up a small shop called The Mill Store where they sold local products from nearby farms and businesses.
They later decided to add beer to their offerings and decided it would be better if they brewed their own beer instead of carrying someone else’s product.

Arrigoni winery
Arrigoni Winery is a family owned and operated winery in New England. We create award winning wines from grapes grown in our vineyards and by local growers throughout New England. Our estate vineyard is located in central Massachusetts.
We have been growing grapes since 1979 when we planted our first vines on a small plot of land in Princeton, Massachusetts. We began selling our wines at local farmers markets and festivals.
In 2000 we opened our own tasting room in North Andover, MA where we sell our wine by the glass or bottle as well as cheese plates and other local products.
Arrigoni Wines produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines made with grapes grown exclusively on our own vineyards located throughout New England including North Andover MA, Princeton MA, Hadley MA and Westminster VT.

The Arrigoni family has been farming in Massachusetts for generations, growing vegetables and fruits on their land in Princeton. In 1979 they began planting grapes and producing wine using recipes handed down from generation to generation.
In 1994 they expanded their vineyard holdings by purchasing additional land in New Hampshire’s White Mountains AVA region, which became the source of most of their production until 2012 when they opened a new facility in North Andover with state-of-the-art equipment for fermentation, barrel aging and bottling.

Bottom line
So there you have it, with New Hampshire as a notable and surprising exception, there are very few wineries in New England. But this doesn’t mean you still can’t get great wine here. As more wineries start to establish themselves here.
And existing ones open up tasting rooms, they’ll likely start bringing their businesses home with them and get those grapes from California. So the next time you crave grape juice, don’t say you can’t get good wine in New England.
Just go to your local store or restaurant and pick up a bottle from Virginia or Washington, or even better head out on a road trip for some reds out west.
