Don’t be fooled by that whole Pinot Noir label craze: wine is so much more than just a fermented juice extracted from grapes. It’s a beverage of culture, history, and agriculture – as well as a celebration for all the senses.

Having spent a lot of time in the Northeast, I’ve discovered on multiple occasions: even with the harsh New England winters, there is a surprising number of wineries in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

These local vineyards make some excellent wines, mainly due to the fact they leverage natural resources like lakes, clean atmosphere, and soil quality to produce delicious wines.

Are there wineries in new england

There are wineries in New England, but they’re a bit harder to find than the vineyards of California or even Oregon. The New England Wine Growers Association says that Vermont is home to more than 14 vineyards, and Massachusetts has at least 13.

While most of these wineries grow grapes for wine-making, some cultivate them for table use.

In Maine, there are only four licensed wineries as of 2011, according to the Maine Brewers’ Guild. But there are several vineyard operations working on getting their crops ready for harvest later this year.

The Vineyard at Great Pond Farm on the outskirts of Portland has been growing grapes for more than 50 years. The farm produces about 4 tons of grapes each year that are used for both table and wine production.

New England is well-known for its wineries, but the region’s reputation is not as much of a well-kept secret as it used to be. In fact, there are many wineries in New England that are becoming increasingly popular with tourists and locals alike.
